LJ Etiquette.
Mar. 4th, 2001 12:21 pmI'm sure the vast majority of us LiveJournal users poke around in other people's journals, to see what other folks are posting for this little part of the world to stumble across. That's what makes all of this fun, isn't it?--the idea that these notions and thoughts and events, which we presume at some level to be sort of private, might become fodder for some complete stranger's amusement or imagination. We're all voyeurs and exhibitionists at some level, aren't we? Hm, if only Misty had a journal.. ;)
Anyway, given the nature of this LiveJournal beast, questions of etiquette pop up. If I'm reading a complete stranger's journal, should I let them know I've read it? And if it interests me, should I go so far as to add them as a friend so I can keep track? I think everyone's answer is a bit different here, and really I think the journal in question will often give you the answer. Some journals are just open and inviting, and make you feel like comments are welcome, and that the journalkeeper wouldn't mind at all if you add them as a friend. I hope mine is like that, anyway--I like it when someone stumbles upon my journal and leaves a note, or adds me so I know I'm being kept up with. That said, I don't usually do that. I think DramaPrincess is the only person I have added as a friend, and that's because a) I know her in the real world (even though I moved away from her!) and b) she was the one who introduced me to LJ in the first place. Other than that, there are maybe a dozen journals I keep up with regularly, and I just have them bookmarked in my browser, as opposed to having them as friends. So I guess that means I miss friends-only entries, but it lets me remain anonymous and lurker-like. :)
Okay, I'm done babbling about this. I'll just sum up and say that anyone out there is welcome to add me as a friend; I may not return the favor, but I'll be glad to know you're reading, and I may just bookmark you too. :)
