Just perusing some news and the like. Here is a fun article (from the Wall Street Journal, of all places) about Death Metal and Cookie Monster vocals. I'd never heard that term before (neither had Frank Oz, who originally did Cookie Monster's voice), but it's a wonderful description of Death Metal "singing". :) The timing is good because I have a friend who just landed in Johannesburg, South Africa (again, of all places) to record an album with his Death Metal band, Diabolic Intent. Choice quote from the article:
"If you want to make music that's terrifying, you have to sing about ripping people's heads off," Mr. Conner of Roadrunner Records told me. "Singing about puppies and kittens isn't too cool."
Hee hee. Funny story. My LJ screen name actually comes from a conversation about Death Metal. After a concert with my aforementioned Death Metal friend, I was talking to another friend about Death Metal band names, and how they have to be gruesome. Cannibal Corpse, Entombed, Carcass. So we started making some up, like Aborted Fetus and Crushed Puppy. That last one struck a chord with me (so to speak), and I turned it into CrushPuppy, and here we are. :)
Also in the news: apparently a Danish newspaper published some political cartoon which depicted (gasp!) Mohammed, the Muslim prophet. That, my friends, was all it took for Muslim fundies to take to the street in protest, smashing things and burning flags and waving pathetically-translated signs. Morons. It's a cartoon, how about you get over yourselves and have a nice day? Sheesh. And CNN has chosen not to show the cartoons out of respect for Islam. This is why PC is so out of control. People get offended for no damn good reason, and everyone is all awww, you poor widdle things. Bah!
Anyway. Life is good! It's been a dismal day weather-wise, but my babies came to have lunch with me and I've been having a good day at work, aside from a rough start (the boss's boss was blaming me for something not my fault, but I think that's more or less straightened out now). Not sure what we're doing this weekend--I guess much will depend on the weather. But I won't be working, so all is good! Must make new munchkin icon!
