Just a weekend update with a little camera-geekery thrown in!

Weekend was pretty good, fairly low-key. We stuck around the house a lot, I mowed the lawn, we took a dip in the pool.. the usual. Heather got to spend some time sewing, which was good. She's gotten some more responses to her Craigslist ad, for some alterations and people looking for custom pieces. I told her she should post an ad to make custom costumes for rock musicians and the like, and she didn't really like the idea since that clientele could be really not our type of people. :) But she got a response from one guy looking for her to make a Mad Hatter-type topcoat for him to wear in his rock band. Kinda cool, I think! So her little business is going quite well.

And that's good news for me too, because as long as she keeps pulling in a little extra each month, we can afford for me to get my new camera shortly after it hits the market, which I drool over a little more every time I see new info or sample shots. Here's a shot taken at ISO 12800. It doesn't look great, but it also doesn't look especially bad, and it's fixable to an extent in post-processing. My current camera does fine up to ISO 400, and then at 800 it gets too noisy for my taste, and 1600 is basically unusable. The 50D goes to 3200 on the sensor, and looks very good up to that point, and then it does some in-camera hoodoo to get 6400 and 12800--those don't look as good, but they're workable for a last resort. And the word is that in the time between now and the camera going into full production, Canon's engineers' task is to improve 6400 and 12800 even further. Want!

In other news, I spent some time setting up my musical equipment this weekend. It had basically been stashed in the closet upstairs, but it's down in the living room with the other musical stuff now. Hermione's been running around singing into a little toy microphone lately, so we thought she might enjoy a real one, and we also thought it would be fun to have some recordings of her doing what she does. So we tried that a little bit yesterday, but of course she got shy when she heard herself coming out of the speakers, and once she got past that all she really wanted to do was shriek and wail into the thing. So we'll work on it, but I think it'll be fun for her to mess around with. And how many 4-year-olds know their way around a sound mixing board?

Okay, better get back to work. I hope everyone is having a lovely day!

Rick Wright, founding member of Pink Floyd, is dead from cancer at age 65. Sad news. RIP.
