It's been pretty toasty here the past few days, and by all indications we're just about done with spring and heading full-bore into summer. Yay, I guess? As the photo indicates, we went to the beach yesterday. Not swimming per se, just playing in the surf. Fun, though! And then when we got home, the girls went in the pool, even though the water is just now getting up to 70F. That's too damn cold for me, but they sure don't seem to mind.

The beach we went to was Ponce Inlet, which is just south of Daytona Beach. It's home to an awesome lighthouse (the tallest in Florida!), but we didn't do that this time. We did the Marine Science Center there again, that's always fun. Nice little place. And then we parked for a little playtime at the beach, which was also fun. Kind of a boring stretch of beach in terms of unique features or wildlife, but nice and broad with hard-packed sand and a nice long littoral zone. Mostly we saw coquina clams (Dorax variabilis), the tiny little ones I grew up calling periwinkles. I always like to look and dig for sand fleas (actually little crustaceans also called mole crabs, in the genus Ermerita), and I did spot a little one swimming but never saw one after that. Anyway, it was fun!

My allergies still suck because the pollen is still everywhere, but my eyes are much improved. Yesterday at the beach was a good choice--between the lack of oak trees and the steady sea breeze, there was probably not much pollen to speak of. But after we got home I made the mistake of spending some time outside, and my eyes got all itchy again. I'm going to try to stay in as much as I can this week! I really hope we're past the peak of it by now.

And I'll get a break from the pollen later this week, when I head up to Canada! Forecast says it's going to be nice and chilly up there. I need to start packing, I guess. I also looked into some tips on cold-weather photography, and avoiding condensation and all that. Hopefully I won't have any problems. And it remains to be seen how much time to explore I'll actually get anyway.

Did I mention the squatters? There's a house across the street from us, the previous owners were foreclosed and moved out maybe 3-4 months ago, and it had been vacant. Suddenly a couple weeks ago, we spotted a couple guys over there cleaning, and we're thinking okay, maybe the bank hired some guys to come clean it up in preparation for going on the market. But they were back the next day with a trailer of furniture (looked like a bed and not much else, really) moving it in. And these are fairly young guys, definitely not the type who seem likely to buy a house. It seemed very odd to us because there had been no activity over there, certainly no For Sale sign or anything. I'm on the HOA board so I asked around if anyone had heard about a sale, and was told no. One of the other neighbors called the bank to ask, and of course they couldn't give out any information, but apparently did eventually confirm that they did not sell the house. But there's not much we can do aside from that--it's the bank's property, so it's up to them to investigate and try to get the people out. And they apparently said they'd be sending someone to inspect the property and ensure it's vacant, so we'll see what happens there. It's not like they're being loud or obnoxious or even doing anything to call attention to themselves. But it's so squicky, and sad that people need to resort to that sort of strategy. Not that it's difficult around here, I think we're still foreclosure capital of the US, or at least in the top 5.

Last week we got an e-mail from the owner of the company that owns the company I work for, downplaying an unspecified rumor that our company is being sold off. It was the first I'd heard of it, so I dug around and found that sure enough, there were reports that a larger cable company had reached a tentative agreement with our owners to acquire us. It's all a rumor right now, and I think any decision will hinge on whether the FCC approves the merger of Comcast and Time Warner Cable (though I suspect that will be approved, politics and payola being what they are these days). I kinda hope it doesn't happen, frankly. Currently we're owned by a privately-held company, which is nice because we aren't answerable to the whims of shareholders and all that. If we're acquired by a public company, that would all change and I imagine there would be a lot of downsizing and added corporate nonsense. Not to mention they would probably chop up our service areas and sell some off--namely the ones I primarily support, which would make me a bit redundant. A little scary to consider, anyway. But also still a ways off in the future, if anything happens at all. For now we just keep on truckin'.

Okay, that's all I can think of for now, and it's about time to call it a day and head home anyway. I hope everyone's week is off to a good start!

Working from home today. Well, sorta working. :) I went in to the office this morning and my eyes were driving my batty with the itching and the burning and the oozing, so I finally said screw it and went to a walk-in clinic. The nurse quickly diagnosed pinkeye, and gave me a prescription for the antibiotic eyedrops. Frankly I was hoping for a prescription for a stronger antihistamine to deal with the allergies making me miserable in the first place, but oh well. Maybe it's the pinkeye making me miserable at this point, so we may as well knock that out before it gets worse. Since it can be pretty contagious, my employee talked me into working from home the rest of the day. So here I am.

It did give me a chance to edit the photos from last night! It was a pretty nice day, so we headed for EPCOT Center after I got home from work. Which probably didn't help my eyes, especially since the Flower and Garden festival is underway. But oh well, we had a good time. I took Hermione and Amy on Test Track--they tried that for the first time recently and became fans. Hallie tried it too, but the look of terror on her face for the last bit of the ride makes me understand why she's not interested in going on it again. :) now I need to drag someone onto the Tower of Terror with me! And Space Mountain. And Expedition: Everest. I think Amy will be up for anything and everything when she's tall enough.

Not too much else going on, really. I'm gearing up for my Canada trip, which begins a week from tomorrow. And starting to pick dates for my next round of work visits. But I've mentioned all that already, so yeah.

Okay, enough for now. I think Heather and the girls are heading to the library soon, which will mean I'll have some time to watch a movie on the tv. Nice! I hope everyone's week is going well, and that your eyes are not oozy like mine.

I see some of you posting pics full of some white stuff I am not familiar with. This is what we do in February in Florida!

Saturday we wanted to go to an event that sounded neat on the Stetson University campus in Deland--there's a geological museum there that we've long wanted to check out, and it's usually closed on the weekends. But about once a month they open it up on a Saturday in conjunction with some special presentation for the young'uns. This time it was a lady sculptor of Cherokee ancestry, showing some of her work and then running a little pottery workshop for the kids. Naturally the girls enjoyed that, since they've always loved working with Play-Doh (and more recently, oven-bake polymer clay).

A Few More? )
And that's about it. I came (back) down with a cold or something Saturday and wasn't feeling good at all. Not a whole lot better Sunday either, but I was still game to head to Downtown Disney and the LEGO store. I got the new Detective's Office set, which is awesome. :) And we got to check out some of the work that's been completed on the conversion of DD to Disney Springs, including our first time parking in the new garage. Not bad, I like how it's coming along. Still a ways to go, though, and the traffic still crawls through there. And that was a Sunday morning in the off-season, it must have been a nightmare around the holidays.

Okay, I need to get a little more work done. I'm still feeling pretty crappy today, so I think after a 2pm conference call I'll head home and take a nap. Hope everyone's week is off to a good start!

It was a 3-day weekend, but it felt shorter because we stayed busy--the weather was glorious, mostly sunny with highs in the 60s. Seasonable, for a change, and we did not waste the chance to be out and about in it!

Saturday I saw that a B-17 I wanted to spend some time with was going to be at the Ocala airport, which is about an hour away from home. So I suggested we go up there, and check out some new parks in the area as well.

What the heck, I'll do a quick photo update about the weekend.

Thanksgiving was lovely, as I mentioned. Friday I worked--well, I came to the office, anyway, though I can't say much work got done! While I was working, the girls were putting up some Christmas decorations around the house. With our upcoming trip, we'd been debating whether or not to put up our Christmas tree now or wait until we get back. But traditionally we put it up after Thanksgiving, so after I got home from work Friday I got it down from the attic and we set that up after dinner.

Enough for now! Tomorrow I thought I had no staff meeting (and hence no drive to St. Petersburg), but it turned out my boss had cancelled the meeting by mistake, so both are on after all. That's good, as I need him to sign my expense reports for those last two trips, otherwise the wife will not be happy, new doll or not!

Some Pics!

Weekend before last, I took Hallie to Disney's Hollywood Studios for the Indiana Jones stunt show. We'd gone to it once before, and they only did half of it because it was rainy. Plus there's a rumor that Disney is going to close the show soon to make room for an expanded Star Wars area, so we wanted to make sure we saw it before that happens. I like the show a lot, I think Hallie did too. Being such a fan, how could she not?

Update!

Okay, randomness.

-The weather looks AMAZING for the upcoming weekend. We have a front coming through (unfortunately not in time to make Halloween night very cool) and the weekend highs are in the low 70Fs, nice and sunny. Can't wait! Speaking of weather, for my California trip it looks nice too, though just a touch warm, low to mid-80Fs. Not too bad!

-Speaking of California, I'm still a little up in the air (so to speak) on what to do with myself. I had planned a driving tour along the coast and up through Los Padres and to another park or two. But then I mapped it on Google and discovered the driving time was like 6 hours altogether, and that's no bueno. So instead I think I might explore LA itself a little more--head up to Beverly Hills and Hollywood, see some sights in those parts. And still work in a couple parks and detours on my way to Bakersfield. I sorta wish Disneyland were an option again--timewise it is, money-wise notsomuch. It's silly to me that WDW passholders get no discount on admission at DL and vice-versa.

-Speaking of Disney, last Friday we went to get our new passes, yay! I had some photography gigs coming up out there, so I had a need for my pass and the money from the gigs helps to pay for them. We took a pretty long break between passes, so the girls were ready and excited to go back. We just went to the Magic Kingdom and didn't do a whole lot, but it was fun and I'm glad Amy will have the chance to see Mickey and Minnie since she loves them.

-Speaking of photo gigs, yesterday morning I had a shoot at the Magic Kingdom (so my pass got put to use right away!). It was fun, a very nice couple from Brazil here on vacation, and they wanted a maternity/vacation shoot. I think it went pretty well, though I probably won't get to edit anything until I get back from CA.

-Speaking of nothing in particular, on my way back from Disney yesterday I saw a commercial van for a crane company. The company's logo, displayed proudly on the back and doors of the van: "We Make Shit Happen." And I was like, uh, even beyond the questionale language for a commercial vehicle, the generally understood meaning of "shit happens" would seem to make that a poor motto as well. But then again, it certainly caught my eye, so if I ever find myself in need of a crane to make shit happen, I guess I'll know where to go.

-Weekend was pretty good.. Saturday Heather had a concert at a local art festival type deal, so I took the kids and roamed while she was playing. They had fun in the bounce houses and looking at the art displays from the local schools, and they made some edible art in the form of pixie dust type candy layered in a clear plastic bottle. Not too bad. Sunday I thought Heather could use a break so I took the girls over to Brevard to visit my Mom, and also to meet our friend Holly and her family so I could take some pics of them. On the drive over, Amy started fussing and then threw up. I pulled over to get her cleaned up, and she seemed okay and wanted to keep going. But a few minutes later she threw up again. But by then we were a lot closer to our destination than home, so we soldiered on and aside from some clinginess, she seemed perfectly fine the rest of the day. So I dunno, maybe it was motion sickness, or just a hair in her throat or something. She had two full-sized pieces of pizza at lunch and said she was hungry again not long after, and that all stayed down, so.. yeah. Kinda weird, she hardly ever tosses her cookies. Otherwise it was a good day!

-I still haven't updated about my Indianapolis trip, have I? Ah well, probably not today either. We'll see. I'm sure you're very disappointed,

-In a meeting again, so I guess I should pay attention, eh? Have a great day!
kv0925: (Gromit Reading)
Well. The past 2 days have seen me working from our St. Petersburg office, which is where my boss and a number of colleagues work. Usually I only make that trek (about 110 miles each way) once every other week, so two days in a row is unusual! But the reimbursement for mileage will be nice, and I do like getting free lunches out of the deal. Plus I actually enjoy the drive, for the most part. I crank up the radio, belt along with the tunes, and treat myself to a Starbucks mocha frappuccino for the morning. Plus with the drive time thrown in, my actual work time for the day ends up being pretty abbreviated. Not a bad deal all around.

Speaking of work, my upcoming trips are coming together. Indianapolis (next week!) flights/hotel/car are all booked, and flights for Bakersfield at the end of the month and Birmingham early next month are booked as well. That just leaves Detroit, but that's over a month off so I'll wait until I get reimbursed for the rest of the airfare, at least. I'm going solo this time, so I'm making sure to give myself some time for exploration. I have a tentative plan for my free time in Indy already. Still contemplating for Bakersfield, and I may have a pretty decent amount of time there because the usual overnight flight I take from the BFL airport seems to have been eliminated. So instead I'm planning to add a second hotel night, which is actually good because I never get much/any sleep when I fly overnight anyway. So as it stands, I'll fly into LAX and have all afternoon and evening to do something and make my way to Bakersfield. Then the next day I spend at the office, and again I'll have all evening to fill and make my way towards LA for the flight home the next morning.

Anyway, what else is going on.. My Project 365 is still going, and I haven't missed a day yet! Okay, I've had to cheat once or twice, throwing in an extra shot from the previous day. But I don't feel too bad about it, since it's all supposed to be for fun anyway, right?

Ugh, I'm all stuffy and runny today. I don't think it's a cold, my eyes have been itchy lately so I suspect allergies. No fun either way.

Hm, I never updated about last weekend, did I? Let's have some photos!

I realized I didn't post about my kayaking excursion from the weekend before last! It had been a while, so I felt I really ought to get back out on the water, and I'd enjoyed the couple Sunday-morning paddles I'd done on the Wekiva, so I loaded up bright and early again. And now that summer's winding down and school's back in session, there was even less traffic than usual on the river, which was nice. I'm sure I was the first one out from Wekiva Springs State Park, and I didn't meet anyone coming the other way until near the Rock Springs confluence. I went downstream to just past Wekiva Island, and then came back up. And as the image up top teases, I made some friends!

Sunday morning we had no plans, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to load up my kayak and hit the water. After that nice paddle along the Wekiva River a few weeks back, I'd wanted to go there again. So I tossed the boat in the van and off I went!

Look, no photos for a change! Not that photos are a bad thing, I'm quite fond of them myself. But I just didn't take many this weekend, and really nothing worth sharing. So.. yeah.

It wasn't a bad weekend, though. Started out nicely Thursday afternoon, when the wife e-mailed me to say we could go get my Father's Day present that evening. Nothing too shocking, just another kayak. Yes, ANOTHER one! This is the single-adult one I'd had my eye on, so that we can all go out together when we want to, and also for me to take out on solo excursions. Actually okay, you can have a photo after all, even though it's not my photo:

bali10

It's purty! It's also much lighter to haul around than the big 3-person one, and a good deal faster on the water as well. Once we got it home, we took it down to the neighborhood lake so I could take it on a test run. It's definitely less stable than the big one--it's a sit-on-top, but as you can see, the seat is still down pretty low in the hull, and I think the bottom is less flat than a lot of sit-on-tops as well. So that will take a little getting used to. There's a little waterproof hatch between the legs, which will be handy for wallet and cell phone. And the watertight black box in the stern is removable so it can be towed behind, which is kinda nifty. But it did seem like a wetter ride than the big kayak too, though maybe that can be remedied with some scupper plugs. Anyway, I think I'll need a few times out to get comfortable with it before I dare to take a camera along. The iPhone will have to do for a start!

On Saturday we headed over to Dad's in Sebastian, which is about a 2-hour drive. Along the way we stopped at a park we like in St. Cloud, which was fun. But Amy left her little stuffed animal on the playground, and realized it once we were about 10 minutes away, so we weren't about to turn back. But she complained about it the whole rest of the way. Not very fun. We met Dad for lunch first--there don't seem to be many restaurants to choose from in his area, which kinda sucks. Then we went back to his place to hang out for a while, and he and I went to his bank so he could add me to his accounts. He's trying to be prepared in case anything happens to him, I guess, though so far the cancer is still in remission so that's all good. We stopped at the grocery store on the way home to pick up some fried chicken for dinner, and that was about it for the day. Spending 4 hours in the car is exhausting!

Sunday was Father's Day, and initially I'd planned to take the girls and meet a friend at a park. But the girls all slept in late, and then said they didn't want to go anywhere since we'd been gone all day Saturday. So that was out. Instead I worked on the pressure washer a little more and cleaned a bit of the driveway, and then we went out for lunch. We stopped by a music store too, where we almost bought Hallie a new violin--she's interested in keeping up with it but needs a larger size. But we restrained ourselves and found it on Amazon for cheaper, thankfully. In the afternoon I took Hallie and Amy out to the second-run movie theater to catch Muppets Most Wanted. Hallie and I enjoyed it, and Amy fell asleep for about half of it, which was not a bad thing at all. Heather made one of my favorites for dinner, I got in some video-gaming time, and again that was about it for the day.

Back to the grindstone today, and it's been a busy one since my employee is on vacation until tomorrow. And tomorrow I'll be on the road to St. Pete, which I'm actually rather looking forward to. It's nice to hit the road and groove to some tunes for a while. And earn mileage money too. :)

I hope everyone's week is off to a good start!

I mentioned that my sister-in-law came over for a visit this past weekend, and there was kayaking. Sunday evening the afternoon rainstorms seemed to have passed, so after dinner we decided to go out to a park and for dessert. The park was good for some photos, so here you go!

We did a fair amount of paddling this weekend! My sister-in-law came over for a visit, so Saturday evening we loaded up the kayaks and headed out to Secret Lake Park in Casselberry. It's a nice park with a playground and a short hike and boardwalk, but it also has a launch onto North Triplet Lake, which is connected via little canals to (as the name might imply) two other lakes, Middle Triplet and South Triplet. There are actually some other lakes it connects to as well, but North Triplet and Middle Triplet lakes have been fine to get started with. We thought it would make a nice first excursion with the new kids' kayak (though we did try it in the neighborhood lake first, as I mentioned before).

I suppose I would be remiss to not mention the severe overhaul of our beloved LJ. I dunno, this sort of thing just doesn't faze me all that much. I'm always amused when Facebook changes something and everyone freaks out because the totally-free service they enjoy using has been modified. Of course, I understand that a lot of people DO pay for LJ, and for all of us it represents a pretty significant time investment--I've been here for nearly 14 years myself! But even so, I'm here for the content, and if the container that content comes in starts to look different, it doesn't really bother me as long as it functions more or less the same. It will be interesting to see what future changes LJ has in store--I guess the new CEO is ex-Google and ex-Microsoft, so she's undoubtedly a smart cookie. I'll reserve judgement until I see if it makes things better, worse, or simply different.

On to the weekend recap, then?

Mmm, static.

I know, the massive photo updates have been coming fast and furious in these parts lately. But I'm done traveling for a while, so this should be the last of its sort for a while, aside from the usual weekend travels around central Florida. We're planning a summer trip at the end of July, though, so all bets are off then!

One more week to go before life gets back to normal! All of my out-of-state trips are behind me, but tonight I'm heading over to Tampa to stay at a hotel for a few days while going through an important training for work. Six Sigma Green Belt, if anyone out there has a clue what that means. We did Yellow Belt last year, so this is the next step. It's a pretty highly desirable item to have on the resume if I ever need to find another job, so it's a nice thing for work to be footing the bill for. Tampa's only an hour away, but the boss wants us focused and able to study and refresh during the evenings, so the hotel is to keep us from needing to spend so much time on the road while the class is underway. I feel rather guilty about it, after being out of town so much over the past month. But after this, no more for a while!

Before I go, though, I thought I'd better make a massive catch-up photo post covering my last couple trips and some stuff in between. So here we go!

The funeral--more of a memorial service, I guess--for my uncle Saturday wasn't too bad. I sorta hate it when the person doing most of the talking about the deceased is someone who never met them--just a preacher tossing out vague homilies and tossing out characteristics that we probably all want applied to us in life and in death. He was a great guy, he had a great sense of humor, he was there for his kids, etc. But anyway, after she was done his children, my cousins, got up and spoke about him, and my grandmother shared some details about his life that we may not have known, and a couple of his coworkers spoke about him. That part was very nice. Afterwards, we went to his house for some family time, and that was pretty good. Not too maudlin, thankfully. It was very strange to have both my Mom and my Dad there--they split up when I was pretty young, and really haven't been in the same place for that long in probably 25 years, at least. My Mom's other brother and his wife were there as well, having flown in from Texas. We visited them there on our Texas trip a couple years ago, and now they're planning to move back to Florida, which will be nice. My aunt and my wife get along famously, since they're both big into sewing. They're still looking around for a place and haven't even settled on which part of the state they want to move to, but hopefully it won't be too far.

Before the service we went to Morningside Nature Center, which is a nice Gainesville city park that includes an old-style Florida farm, with some farm animals to pet. They had a pair of lambs that weren't even 24 hours old, so that was an unexpected treat! After that we went to the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus, and we did the Butterfly Rainforest before I had to head over to the funeral home. We figured the girls wouldn't particularly enjoy or understand the service, so I left them and Heather at the museum to roam around while I went to the service. It all worked out pretty well, even though traffic around the campus was terrible thanks to the Orange & Blue Debut, which I gather is an intramural game the UF football team puts on after spring training. Go Gators, I guess. Apparently Hermione would like to go to college there (currently she wants to study geology and paleontology, and I do believe it's a good school for that), so maybe I'll become more of a fan later on. :)

Sunday we stayed pretty close to home--the girls have wanted to go to a particular park for a while, so we went there before lunch. I spent some time working on the pool and we ran the heater for a bit, so after we got back from lunch and relaxed for a bit the girls took their first dip for the year. It only got up to about 76F so it was still rather chilly for me and Heather, but the girls didn't seem to mind. We'll run the heater again next weekend, probably, and hopefully that will get it to a good temperature for everybody. I think we're pretty much past any cold snaps--we have a cold front moving in this week, but this time of year that really just means a little rain and not much of a temperature change.

After dinner Heather took the older girls ice skating, and I came along with Amy. Heather was disappointed that I'll be out of town for their next 3 lessons, which is the rest of the session--she'd been wanting me to go get some photos of her and Hallie skating. So this made up for that, and I think even better because I got Hermione too, and she's not doing the lessons.

And that was the weekend! So have some photos: Clicky! )

20140322-IMG_8794_HDR

So Saturday I had an ambitious plan. We'd decided on St. Augustine, so the plan was to hit a state park over in Palm Coast, then head up A1A and maybe visit Fort Matanzas on the way to the St. Augustine lighthouse. And THEN swing over to another state park we've been wanting to visit before heading home. I knew going in that it was probably too ambitious for us, but aim high, right? Ha!

So firstly, we didn't even get out the door until after 9am. The girls slept in and then took their time getting ready, despite saying how excited they were to go explore some new places. So I figured okay, maybe we won't have time for that last state park, especially since it's a bit out of the way.

When we left, I again noticed something I'd noticed the night before: the van's starter cranked a bit more slowly than usual. It started, so I didn't think too much of it. And I'm sure you can already see where this is going.

We stopped at a Publix in Palm Coast to get our usual picnic lunch: a sub for Heather and I to share, and Lunchables for the kids. Headed back out to the van to be on our way, and.. dead battery. I kicked myself because I should have known that was why the slow cranking. And I didn't think to put jumper cables in the van, either. So I called AAA, but as I was talking to them the couple in the car next to us offered a jump, so I said great! and got off the phone. Unfortunately I'd misheard them: I thought he'd said he had cables and could give us a jump, but he actually said if *I* had cables he could give us a jump. Oops. But we managed to find someone with a pair to lend, and got cranked up in short order. But then our first order of business was to secure a new battery, so off to the auto parts store. That was actually quick and pleasant--the weather was lovely and the auto parts guy was very nice, so he popped in the new battery and that did the trick. But between our late start and unforeseen delay, it looked like more of the agenda would have to be sacrificed.

So we went to Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, which is definitely a new favorite. The park straddles A1A in Palm Coast, between the Matanzas River on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. So on one side of the road it's a nice riverfront park with some cool old structures, magnificent live oaks, and a neat formal garden. And on the other side of the road it's a strand of beach unlike anything I've seen elsewhere in Florida. My perennial favorite beach has been Playalinda, near Titusville, which I like because it's so natural and undeveloped, unlike a lot of touristy stretches of beach lined with hotels and surf shops and whatnot. This beach was a lot like that, but with the added bonuses of lots of coquina rocks to climb on and seashells to sift through. Definitely a new favorite park and beach.

So the girls had a blast exploring the beach, and then we went across to the other side of the park. And by then everyone was a bit worn out and it was already into mid-afternoon, so we decided to call it a day and leave St. Augustine and that other park for another day. I still want to climb that lighthouse!

Sunday we planned to mostly take it easy, but we headed out in the morning for one of our favorite local parks, lunch, and a stop in at Goodwill to donate some stuff and find some more books to add to our collection. I really do need to get going on the library project sometime!

Okay, more photos from the weekend: Clicky! )
And that's about all for now. I just realized I never posted about the Christmas Wish photo session! I'll do that in another entry. Hope everyone is having a good Monday so far!
