What happens when I'm bored at work?
May. 23rd, 2008 01:55 pmI don't do many meme-type things, but I thought this was an interesting idea. :)
Comment on this post and I will choose seven interests from your profile. You will then explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers to your own journal so that others can play along.
My 7 interests were chosen by my Norwegian friend,
caramel_83. This is kind of interesting because I started my LJ in 2000, and haven't really changed my interests list much since then. Let's see if I still like any of this stuff!
peter himmelman: Back in my college days, I used to go to a big pawn shop near the school quite often, and would walk out with a handful of used cd's every time--sometimes things I'd never heard of, because the album art or lyrics in the booklet looked good. Some were hits, some misses--Peter Himmelman was one such discovery who turned out to be a hit. He writes a good tune, has what I'd call an Everyman voice, and frequently has a way with words and a wry humor that I appreciate. He's made a few children's music albums too, which are also good.
counting crows: Another musical interest, and a band most folks have at least heard of. I haven't been as impressed with their last few albums as I was with the first three, but I still count (ha!) myself a fan.
aphorisms: I really enjoy it when folks can condense a deep and broad thought into a concise group of words. I have lots of books full of aphorisms that are always good for a random flip-and-read, and some of my perennial favorite thinkers were masters of the aphorism--Socrates, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Rochefoucauld.
nickel creek: I lived in Nashville for a year or two, and discovered that I liked bluegrass music. Nickel Creek was a trio of young bluegrass musicians who particularly impressed me, because they were virtuoso musicians (particularly Chris Thile, the mandolin player) but managed to combine traditional bluegrass with some modern pop sensibilities. They're on something of an extended hiatus currently, but still rock my socks.
berkeley breathed: One of my favorite comic-strip artists, behind Bill Watterson (of "Calvin & Hobbes" fame). Breathed is known for the strips "Bloom County," "Outland," and nowadays "Opus," but my favorite of his work is his childrens' books, like A Wish For Wings That Work. Amazing artwork, and very clever text as well.
my wife: What kind of husband would I be if I didn't count my wife as one of my interests? :) Out of respect for her privacy, I don't write too much about her aside from chronicling some of the things we do together, but she's truly wonderful, and a fantastic wife and mother. I'm a very lucky man, and very proud of her and the life we've built together. :)
raisinets: I'd have to say that my primary vice is candy of various types, and Raisinets (chocolate-covered raisins) are one of my many favorites. I manage to fool myself into thinking they're somewhat healthy. Right? Right!
So there you have it. Anybody else want to play?
