A glimpse into how my mind works: The wife and I generally try to catch some Prairie Home Companion each weekend as we're driving to and fro. Last night regular guests Robin and Linda Williams (husband/wife folk duo, so it isn't *that* Robin Williams!) were on. For some reason that made me think of Richard and Linda Thomspon, another husband/wife folk duo, who have a son named Teddy Thompson, who in turn is a more modern-style singer-songwriter. That made me wonder what he's been up to, since I only have (and adore) his first album from a few years back. So today, unfortunately feeling a bit more sickly than I did yesterday, I thought I'd take a little bit of time to check in on some of my preferred musical artists and see what they're up to!
The aforementioned Teddy Thompson: Released an EP called Blunderbuss in 2004, and a full-length album called Separate Ways last year. Also has a song or two on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack. He's doing a little tour on the west coast in February with none other than...
Duncan Sheik, who has either just released or is about to release a new album called White Limousine, his first since 2002's Daylight. Have to keep an eye out for that!
del Amitri, one of my all-time favorite groups, have been more or less split up for a while. But the frontman, Justin Currie, recorded a solo album last year that he's shopping around, hopefully to be released this year. I hope so--he has a great sense of humor, and the lyrics to his songs are definitely one of the main reasons I've always loved del Amitri so much.
Peter Himmelman I've kept better track of, and even bought his last album, Unstoppable Forces, which came with a bonus HimmelVaults disc of rarities. He also made a new HimmelVaults collection available for free download on his site, which was very nice. He also has a new album, Imperfect World, which I'll have to check out. He also does the music for the tv show Judging Amy.
Dishwalla put out a new, eponymous album last year, which was fairly decent. Not as good as the prior Opaline, though.
Angie Aparo (who wrote--and recorded a far better version of--the hit "Cry" by Faith Hill) put out an album of mostly cover songs in 2002 called Weapons of Mass Construction, and in 2003 an independent album, For Stars and Moon. I'd love to get those, but I doubt they're availabl;e locally. Might have to mail-order! He's currently working on songs for a new album.
Freedy Johnston.. hm, a cd of old demos came out in 2004, but no news since.
Glen Phillips (formerly of Toad the Wet Sprocket) put out Winter Pays For Summer last year, which was good. Currently recording a new album for release later this year. I also really need to order the Mutual Admiration Society, a disc recorded by Glen and...
Nickel Creek, whose Why Should the Fire Die? just came out last year. I really need to see if I can't get some of their respective solo albums, though, especially Chris Thile's Not All Who Wander Are Lost and Deceiver. That boy rocks the mandolin, if such a thing is possible. :)
Sister Hazel are working on the follow-up to Lift, for release later this year.
Tonic.. hm, seem to be broken up, or at least on hiatus. The lead singer, Emerson Hart, has a solo record coming out soon.
Ooooooh! New Train album coming out on January 31! Good timing, as I've been listening to their stuff lately.. such a good band. Hopefully this one will be better than the last, which just couldn't touch Drops of Jupiter.
Okay, enough of that. Just got back from a little shopping excursion, which is about all I feel up to today. And back to work tomorrow. For joy. My boss is done with the special project that has taken him away for the past 8 weeks or so, so now we'll get more or less back to normal. Hopefully that means I'll get some of my motivation back! When the cat's away and all. :)
